Brief

Competition is a challenge type where the goal is to challenge your players to directly compete against each another. This challenge can be played as a team or as an individual. The highest scorer or the top-scoring team of the challenge wins. As opposed to other types of challenges, in this one the outcome is completely dependent on the comparative performance of players and their direct rivals in order to determine who comes out as a winner.

Where we expect good results from this solution

  • Disengagement, Lack of motivation

The introduction of gamification elements to everyday workflow can be used to combat these issues, by providing workers with a clear goal that accurately reflects what is expected of them and a mechanism for them to track this goal while competing with their peers. At the same time, this challenge can bring a new level of variance to the work day that reinvigorates people’s morale and motivation to work.

  • Lack of speed & Lack of productivity

In this challenge type, seeing as you are directly competing your peers, your main method of winning is to outdo them, being faster and more productive than your rivals results, resulting in a higher chance to win. It is important to keep in mind though that matchmaking plays a very important role here, it is important to team your players up strategically in order to get the most ideal outcomes from this challenge, people more engaged in the competitive aspects of gamification at the most ideal to achieve the best possible outcome.

  • Low punctuality / Attendance

Although the solution may not be the most adequate for extreme cases of “no call no show” since those are derived from other factors, this challenge type can be used to incentivize your workers to be more punctual and to have as much attendance as possible by rewarding the players who achieve the most in these aspects.

Where the solution may not be the most adequate

  • Lack of precision

Due to the nature of how competition works, if players get too focused on the end goal of winning it, is expected that precision can take a toll seeing as it is extremely hard to be fast and precise, one can add this as a focus of the challenge in order to mitigate it as a problem, although it is expected that broadly it will be a problem.

  • Low team cohesion

The competitive nature of a human being when playing this challenge will not focus on the team cohesion and take into account what other colleagues may think and feel, unless it's a competition between teams. Thus, low team cohesion is not the focus of this challenge, but it may be developed in team competitions.

  • Low morale

Although this challenge helps in motivating your employees to be better than their peers, it is not specifically created to improve their morale, as the competitive character sometimes impedes a high morale.
