Brief
Duels are a challenge type where the goal is to challenge your players to directly compete against one another to achieve a goal or meet a target. As opposed to other types of challenges, in this one the outcome is completely dependent on the comparative performance of players and their direct rivals in order to determine who comes out a winner. This makes this challenge type more of an advanced challenge type that should not be done as an introductory challenge except in cases where ultra-competition is desired.
Where we expect good results from this solution
Disengagement, Lack of motivation
The introduction of gamification elements to everyday workflow can be used to combat these issues, by providing workers with a clear goal that accurately reflects what is expected of them and a mechanism for them to track this goal while competing with their peers. At the same time, this challenge can bring a new level of variance to the work day that reinvigorates people’s morale and motivation to work.
Lack of speed & Lack of production/Quantity
In this challenge type, seeing as you are directly competing with someone else, your main method of winning is to outdo them, being faster than your rival results in more quantity, resulting in a higher chance to win. It is important to keep in mind though that matchmaking plays a very important role here, it is important to pair your players up strategically in order to get the most ideal outcomes from this challenge, people more engaged in the competitive aspects of gamification at the most ideal to achieve the best possible outcome.
Where the solution may not be the most adequate
High turnover, Low punctuality / Attendance
It is possible that this solution helps with this problem, although it is not what it was designed to solve so we cannot guarantee direct results from using it.
Lack of precision
Due to the nature of how duels work, if players get too focused on the end goal of winning it, is expected that precision can take a toll seeing as it is extremely hard to be fast and precise, one can add this as a focus of the challenge in order to mitigate it as a problem, although it is expected that broadly it will be a problem.
Lack of motivation
Once again due to the nature of how duels work there must always be a someone who wins and someone who loses, essentially resulting in a motivational net zero. This is heavily dependent on how fair the duel matchmaking is and it is only expected to only start showing consequences after a couple of duels or sequenced losses in duels.
